"Wicked Easy" Grilled Asparagus

Tender, smoky, and sweet, grilled asparagus is the perfect side dish for any meal! Here are the simple steps for making this vegetable side-dish creation the easy way!

I like thick asparagus spears when it comes to grilling. Look for thick spears that are firm and green, with ends that aren’t withered. The ends of the asparagus are woody and tough to eat, so the first step is to remove this part.

An easy way to do this is to simply snap the ends off by bending each stalk gently about 2/3 of the way down the stalk. The asparagus will naturally break where the woody part begins, leaving the tender stalks ready for cooking!

Here are the ingredients for the Grilled Asparagus recipe. One bunch of trimmed asparagus. I like to use medium to large sized asparagus when grilling. Thick asparagus stalks won’t overcook or char to a crisp when grilled, not will they fall through the grill grates as easy as thinner stalks.

Whisk the lemon juice, olive oil, minced garlic, salt and pepper together in a bowl. Add the seasoning mixture to the asparagus and toss until well coated.

I like to use tongs when grilling asparagus as they make it easier to maneuver the spears.

Preheat the grill to medium heat (between 350 and 400 *F) and brush the grates clean. Place the seasoned asparagus across the grill grates perpendicular to the bars so that they don’t fall through.

Grill the asparagus for 5 to 10 minutes in total, depending on the size of the asparagus and temperature of the grill. Use the tongs to roll the spears for even grill marks. Transfer to a plate or platter for service. They can be served warm or at room temperature.

Leftover Grilled Asparagus: You can repurpose your leftover grilled asparagus in many ways, including on sandwiches, in salads, and as a filling for omelets and frittatas.

To elevate this recipe, try topping the grilled asparagus with grated parmesan cheese or crumbled feta cheese!

Cuisine American, French
Servings 4 people

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch Asparagus, about 1 pound
  • 1 each Lemon, juiced
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 tsp Garlic, minced
  • As Needed Salt and Pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat grill to medium heat.
  • Remove the woody ends of the asparagus by snapping the ends off. Bend each stalk gently about ⅔ of the way down the stalk until it naturally breaks where the woody part begins. Discard the ends.
  • Whisk the lemon juice, olive oil, minced garlic, salt (about ½ teaspoon) and pepper (about ¼ teaspoon) together in a large bowl. Add the trimmed asparagus or pour the mixture over the asparagus, and toss until well coated.
  • Place the asparagus on the grill perpendicular to the grates so they don't fall through. Grill until the asparagus begins to char and the stalks are just getting tender, about 3 to 5 minutes, depending in the thickness of the asparagus. Be sure to turn / rotate the asparagus around the halfway point of the cooking so they char on all sides.
  • Remove to a plate and serve immediately.
