Buttery Tomato Sauce

This "Wicked Easy" Homemade Tomato Sauce from scratch is the simplest sauce to make and has a purer sweet tomato taste! Use your favorite canned (or fresh) tomatoes for this recipe and don't be scared off by the butter, as it is what gives the sauce an unparalleled velvety richness!

These are the raw ingredients to make the wicked easy buttery tomato sauce! Basically 5 main ingredients (tomatoes, butter, garlic, onion, and dried herbs) plus salt and pepper for seasoning. The butter makes the sauce rich and smooth while also balances out too much acidity, something that is very common in many types of fresh and canned tomatoes.

To start, heat the butter in a medium-sized pot. For a vegan take, use olive oil instead of the butter. The sauce will be similar and still great, it just won’t have that rich and velvety buttery taste to it.

Once the butter has melted, add in the diced onion and cook until translucent, about 3 to 4 minutes. Then add in the minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds more.

Add in the diced tomatoes and the dried basil and oregano to the saucepan. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and then cook uncovered at a simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring periodically. This simmering of the tomatoes, herbs, veggies and butter is where the magical transformation happens!

When done, taste and correct the seasonings with salt and pepper if needed.

Now I love this sauce in its purest form, however we all know that recipes are just a guide and there are all kinds of ways to dress it up should you feel the need. For example, if you like garlic, add some more. Maybe use fresh herbs or tomatoes from the garden when they are in season! I sometimes  throw in a pinch of red pepper flakes at the end of cooking when I am looking for a spicier sauce.

You can leave the sauce chunky as-is, or puree until smooth using a food mill, immersion blender, or food processor depending on what you are going to use it for.

I find using an immersion blender is the easiest way to puree the sauce, as it not only allows you to control how thick or thin the consistency of the final sauce is, but clean up is a breeze!

Whether thick or thin, this sauce goes great with just about everything! It is an ideal bed for homemade meatballs, a perfect partner for al dente pasta or freshly made potato gnocchi!

It also goes great as a dipping sauce for crusty garlic bread or knots, and makes an incredible pizza sauce! Versatile, delicious, and easy to make, it is the perfect sauce for every use!

This recipe yields about two cups of sauce, however it freezes well so you can easily double the recipe if needed (just cook it in a bigger pot!)
